what else I’m looking at
As always, there’s interesting stuff at The Volokh Conspiracy, one of my favorite websites . . .
Jonathan Adler links to psychologist Stanton Peele’s piece arguing for allowing minors to drink alcohol with their parents. I’m a big fan of this idea and I will probably allow my children to a have a drink at dinner when they’re in their late teens so as to encourage responsible drinking.
David Bernstein has a few thoughts on affirmative action and its impact on black lawyers, noting that “it’s a real problem when the consistent focus of affirmative action in law schools is on how many black students are admitted, with little if any attention paid to how many of the admittees actually succeed in becoming lawyers.” Indeed, I can attest that the goal of diversity appears to be the focus at many law schools, rather than preparing students for an actual career in law.
Also link-worthy is Classical Values and the discussion of a lawsuit in Pennsylvania between a convenience store and beer distributors. Apparently in the Keystone State it’s impossible to find a six-pack at regular grocery stores! Thanks Instapundit.

I believe when you properly expose your children to something like drinking it dismisses the “build-up” associated with drinking/parties/college, etc. Americans tend to think of alcohol in terms of getting trashed. I feel the attitude towards drinking is so negative in the US that it has taken on that persona. It is uncommon practice to tell young teens that alcohol is just a part of a meal, and ingredient of cooking, or a delicacy.
I’ve adopted the “European” take on alcohol – it is what it is! Wine with tapas, beer with your mussels and pommes frites, and a mojito with your enchilada. Délicieux!

Sounds good to me.
